Advisor Information

This section is devoted to assisting you with developing a constitution and by-laws for the organization. Each organization at Truman is required to have a constitution and/or by-laws on file with the Center for Student Involvement. These documents serve as the rules and procedures for the organization in almost every way. The language used in these documents should be clear and concise, not leaving much up to interpretation. The constitution is the document in an organization that should provide the members with direction and purpose. It is important as an advisor to know the constitution of the organization you are working with. Also it is important that you encourage the students to review their constitution regularly, making revisions and corrections as the organization changes over time. Within the constitution or by-laws, your role as the advisor should be defined. It could be beneficial to you as an advisor to be sure that your duties are defined to provide both you and the students a clearer sense of how active you should be. The Center for Student Involvement has information that can help an organization design its constitution. Encourage the students to visit the Center for Student Involvement to receive an outline of a sample constitution and some information on what to include in the constitution.
