Recreational Opportunities in Kirksville
and the Surrounding Area

Big Creek State Forest
This 1200 acre state forest offers many recreational opportunities such as hiking, primitive camping, picnicking, and hunting and fishing in season. Big Creek Forest is located one mile west of Kirksville on West Michigan Street.

Sugar Creek State Forest
When exploring this 2609 acre state forest, arrowheads and other relics of early Indian life along Sugar Creek and the Chariton River are often seen. Camp in primitive surroundings, watch a variety of birds, check out the horseback riding trails, or hunt for game during hunting season. Sugar Creek is located eight miles southwest of Kirksville on Highways N and 11.

Thousand Hills State Park
This 3252 acre park surrounds the 700 acre Forest Lake which provides swimming, boating, sailing, water-skiing, and fishing. There are 101 campsites and a few modern cabins available for camping, enclosed shelters for picnickers, and a dining lodge on the lake. There are more than 12 miles of hiking trails to enjoy and a park naturalist who gives guided nature hikes. Thousand Hills State Park is located 2 miles west of Kirksville on Highway 6. Hazel Creek Lake
This approximately 500 acre lake located north of Kirksville offers fishing.

Kirksville Family YMCA
The Kirksville YMCA facilities include an indoor track, basketball court, four racquetball courts, weight room, gymnastic equipment, aerobics, a sauna, whirlpool, and exercise room. For more information call 665-1922.

A.T. Still Museum
This museum, located at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, offers a glimpse of the first school and birth place cabin of the founder of the college.

Adair County Historical Society Museum
This museum, located in the Sojourner¹s Building at 211 S. Elson, offers military, education, and medical collections as well as A Day in the Life of Adair County and the Loren Schilie Native American artifact collection.

City of Kirksville Facilities
The City of Kirksville offers seven public parks, a six field baseball/softball complex, and four public tennis courts.

Air Travel
Kirksville Regional Airport is located 7 miles south of Kirksville on Highway 63. For flight information call 665-5020.

Voter Registration
Voter Registration is very important‹register either in your home town at the County Clerk¹s Office or at the Adair County Clerk¹s office located in the Courthouse in Kirksville. In about five minutes time you can register. A valid drivers license or other signed personal identification is needed to complete the registration process. Then you will be given a voter identification card which will have your voting location and the precinct listed. When registered in Adair County, students living in on-campus housing are assigned to vote in the Student Union voting location.
