Budget:

a: a plan for the coordination of resources and expenditures
 
b: the amount of money that is available for, required for, or assigned to a particular purpose  

A budget is:

  • A financial planning tool
  • A guideline for an organization's goals expressed in financial terms
  • A statement of estimated and actual expense and income
  • A record of activities

Why use a budget?

  • To keep organizational goals in perspective
  • To help members make fiscally responsible decisions
  • To ensure organizational funds are used appropriately
  • To provide a financial reference for future years

Budget Tips:

  • Develop organizational goals
  • Identify priority projects and needed expenses
  • Carefully research pricing for products and/events
  • Vote to approve an organizational budget
  • Review spending on a regular basis; Compare spending with define goals
  • Keep an accurate log of expenses; Revise budget as necessary
  • Engage in fundraising and/or apply for outside funding opportunities
  • Make suggestions for the future
